The aim of Equality and Diversity course is to introduce learners to theories and concepts of identity, equality and diversity. Explore the social construction and status implications of identity, culture and diversity within Irish society. Support learners to examine and reflect on their own understanding of equality, diversity and anti-discrimination and the relationship to community work in practice. Explore legislation, policy and practice with regard to the promotion of equality in Irish society. Consider the nature of discrimination and equality in relation to gender and ethnicity.

Discuss a range of theoretical perspectives on equality, including the nature and causes of inequality and the impact of inequality on individuals, groups and society.
Examine their own attitudes and assumptions and assess the potential impact this has on community development practice.
Identify community development strategies and approaches to promote equality and challenge discrimination.
Outline the relevant equality legislation and develop appropriate policy responses within community-based organisations.
Review equality and discrimination from the perspectives of gender and ethnicity.
